From Herb to Consecrated Medicine

Footage by Rinzin Norbu Lama (2011)

After purchasing herbs, the participants in the international workshop begin the collective process of making medicine, which gives rise to numerous discussions and fosters the exchange of practical knowledge. First the ingredients are sorted and cleaned. Then they are grouped according to the formula and ground to a fine powder. The powder is then be mixed and then in some cases made into pills. As a last step, the final powders or pills are consecrated in a ritual called mendrup in order to enhance their potency. A Tibetan doctor is expected to be well versed in the ritual and spiritual dimensions of the profession.
